Two Drifters

^Dressed up for our son's wedding - a perfect day! We finished our coastal voyage, spent a night in Bergen and flew out early to Tromsø. We’d booked five nights (four full days) to maximise our opportunities to see the Northern Lights. We found walking around that first afternoon hard in the icy, slippery conditions. Our hotel, the Scanic Ishavshotel was pricey and the room was small but it was right on the water and super close (max five minutes’ walk) to where all our excursions left from. Best of all, we had an enormous window that looked at the water and across to the mainland (Tromsø is an island). The view was to die for even though most of the view was during pitch-dark hours. Tromsø is in the Arctic Circle. When we visited at the beginning of December it was bright (sort of!) at about 10am and dark again between 1 and 2pm. It was so strange yet also amazing to see. We started with a lovely couple of weeks in Rye. The weather was good. This is always the way in Melbourne - school starts back and the weather heats up! We had quite a few gatherings of friends and family, even some old work colleagues and the days passed very easily! Mid February, Andrew and I set off for India. Andrew had been to Mumbai 20 odd years ago for work but I have never been so we were both excited and a little nervous. We started with two days in Delhi then went by car to Agra, Jaipur, Bikaner, Pushkar, Udaipur, Chandelao Garh and Jodphur. The tour included an English-speaking Driver and Guide and they looked after us very well. We kept being told that, in India, guests are “like Gods!” so they couldn’t do enough for us. In Jodphur, we left the tour and hired a different car and guide to take us to Jaisalmer. At the beginning of March, we will fly from there to Delhi and then back home to Melbourne. We have been lucky enough to be travelling in Europe all month! At the beginning of July, our elder daughter (L who is 22) joined us for two weeks so we were a party of five for a while and then the three “kids” went back to Melbourne to uni and work and Andrew and I were “Darby and Joan” again! Euro Adventure Chapter 3 – London: Rewind to the end of June/beginning of July and we ticked off a bucket list item together being attending the second Ashes (cricket) Test at Lord’s. Andrew remembers growing up as a kid in Glen Waverley (I grew up there too!), going to bed with a transistor radio and tuning into a faraway place called England to listen to the Ashes. He also vividly remembers hearing ““Welcome to Lord’s where the covers are on. It’s raining and the start of play will be delayed.”  To actually be at Lord’s for the Ashes is a dream come true for him.
